Christmas 1972

>> Listen to this Article or Add to Podcast
Here's a photo of me, my sister and dad which I think was taken at Christmas 1972.

Joanne pictured centre in this image was born in May 1972 and doesn't look more than a few months old so I guess it's her first Christmas. I will have just turned 3 years old in this photo.

This photo was taken in the living room of 48 Northfield Road, Anlaby Road, Kingston upon Hull. The framed painting still hangs on the wall of our home in Willerby to this day.

After a bit of work today I've managed to get one of my webcams live and streaming to my web site 24/7.

Webcam 2 is located in the cloakroom / hall downstairs. During the day it points out of the window and during the night is aimed at the hall way.

You can view webcam 2 by clicking here or view it on the Jonfry.co.uk web site by clicking here.

UPDATE (27/2/2005):
I've now got webcam 1 working in my office.

UPDATE (16/10/2006):

Queen's Silver Jubilee 1977

>> Listen to this Article or Add to Podcast
My sister Joanne and myself celebrating the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977. A party was arranged at the end of Springdale Close, Willerby for the event and all the children attended wearing fancy dress costumes. I expect this photo was taken around the 6th June 1977.

I've found some old photos while searching through dad's things. These show me on holiday in 1971, I was about 18 months old.

And sat on the driver's seat next to dad.

Is that me in a nappy?

Ronald Fry 11th March 1931 to 10th February 2005

>> Listen to this Article or Add to Podcast
It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my father Ronald (Ron) Fry today at the age of 73.

Ron Fry

Following 2 small strokes in November 2004 dad weakened as his appetite reduced and on New Years Eve at 2pm dad collapsed at home with a major arterial bleed caused by a large stomach ulcer brought about by his medication.

Dad did not fully recover from the effects of this ulcer and contracted both a lung infection and MRSA while in hospital further weakening him beyond his ability to recover.

This afternoon dad lost his battle, peacefully leaving us just before 3.40pm. Both my mother and I were there to the end and I am happy we could comfort him as he passed away.

I will further update this post in the next few days when I feel able.

I have amended the time of this post to reflect the time of my dad's passing.

Night dad xxxxx

Ellen MacArthur Breaks The Record

>> Listen to this Article or Add to Podcast
I've watched this tonight on Sky News and I feel it's such an amazing achievement I'm posting it in my blog.

Ellen MacArthur has crossed the finish line and cracked the fastest time to sail single-handedly around the world non-stop.

After 71 days, 14 hours, 18 minutes and 33 seconds, the yachtswoman from Cowes on the Isle of Wight has broken the record, beating the clock with plenty of time to spare.

MacArthur needed to finish the race against time by 7.04am on Wednesday morning.

But the 28-year-old crossed the line around one day and nine hours ahead of the deadline.

An exhausted MacArthur radioed back to her team telling them it had been an "absolutely unbelievable voyage, both physically and mentally and it's going to take a long time to reflect on it".

After being sprayed with champagne in celebration, her team manager told Sky News: "She's done an awesome job."

MacArthur's 75ft trimaran B&Q was doing 13 knots when it crossed the line at Ushant, France.

Her team is to take over from her to sail B&Q back to Falmouth in Cornwall, where she will receive a hero's welcome tomorrow afternoon.

Getting her record did not come easily for MacArthur. She battled gales, icebergs and technical difficulties and has been left with burns to her arms and bruises after being forced to climb the 90ft mast.

Prince Charles has sent her a note of congratulations, saying: "We have all watched your progress with the greatest possible excitement over the last 71 days and our sense of relief at having you home, and pride in your record-breaking achievement, are boundless."

I've got GMail!

At last I managed to get my hands on a GMail invite thanks to Ark. This means I can ditch my Hotmail account which I've had since I got online back in the days when AOL was the only ISP. Now that's a long time ago!!

Now I know a lot of you are thinking "why does Jon want another email account?" Well it's one way of separating email coming from mailing lists and forums and keeping it away from my main jon.fry email account.

Microsoft are removing access to their Hotmail service via Outlook (and Outlook Express & any other program which uses their WebDav HTTP protocol to retrieve messages) which makes my Hotmail account completely useless being only a magnet for SPAM. As such I've been hoping for a GMail account for months which is a far superior product and allows access via POP aswell as email forwarding, archiving and message threads.

Unfortunately Microsoft have decided they want people like me to visit their web site instead to retrieve their email which is fine if I wasn't bombarded by adverts followed by viewing an inbox full of SPAM because their SPAM filters don't work.

Bye bye Hotmail and hello GMail.

(Oh, and thanks Google!)

Policy on intruders in the home

>> Listen to this Article or Add to Podcast
Today the government has released a leaflet via ACPO and the CPS titled "HOUSEHOLDERS AND THE USE OF FORCE AGAINST INTRUDERS" providing advice on what is reasonable in such rare circumstances that an intruder needs to be confronted and detailing the response householders can expect from the Police and Crown Prosecution Service.

After downloading and studying this leaflet I'm dismayed by the ambiguous language used but not surprised given the preference this government has for spin and the Human Rights Act over the public they are supposed to represent and serve. If the purpose of releasing this leaflet was to clear up the current unclear situation it has failed, and failed miserably.

So if you're interested in seeing what a mess our government made of this leaflet you can download a copy in PDF here.
