Share Ideas on Road Pricing
In a bid to encourage debate and generate new solutions, the RAC Foundation, along with car part specialists Euro Car Parts, is seeking some fresh thinking on the subject by supporting the nationwide Share Ideas Day planned for September 12 and encouraging the public to come up with new ideas on the subject of road pricing.
Some of the issues that people may wish to address are:
- Could charging more for those who use the most congested roads be a fairer system than fuel duty and vehicle excise duty?
- How could motorists guarantee that if charging was introduced that there would be equivalent reductions in other taxes?
- Who would be the winners and losers? Some rural motorists might pay less but urban motorists more?
- Would such a system penalise the poor or socially excluded who depend on their cars?
- What would be the wider effects of road pricing on the North/South divide?
- What would be the effects of road pricing on location of jobs or homes?
- Would people try to move closer to work?
- Will people try to take jobs outside of priced areas?
- Will companies relocate away from the highest priced roads?
- Will companies merely pass on the extra costs and therefore fuel inflation rather than reduce congestion?
- Are motorists worried about being monitored by "Big Brother" Global Satellite systems?
- Can people trust the Government to deliver a fair system?
- Are there easier ways to reduce congestion than congestion charging?
The RAC Foundation will present the best ideas to the Department for Transport.
The campaign is providing practical advice along with a series of on-line Idea banks at www.share-ideas-day.com - for everyone to access and make use to make the world a better place.
Commenting on the campaign Edmund King of the RAC Foundation said: "The congestion charging issue needs fresh thinking and the involvement of Britain's motorists - Share Ideas Day is the perfect vehicle to stimulate debate."
"His views were echoed by Mark Wardell of Euro Car Parts who said: "There must be lots of positive ideas out there which can help the cause of making our road less congested and have the support and co-operation of the driving public."
Also featured in Share Ideas Day are Idea Banks for specific topics including how can we make democracy work better and what can be done to make our use of packaging more environmentally friendly.
Share Ideas Day aims to;
- provide a focal point to encourage people to come up with new ideas and share them to make the world a better place
- celebrate the role of creativity and joined-up thinking in everyday life and how we can achieve far more by sharing, than by acting alone.
- create a series of Idea Banks for Action Areas across a range of issues
- symbolise September 12 as a landmark for creating a better future.
